Common Questions

What is Deregulation?

Deregulation is the removal of government controls from an industry or sector, to allow for a free and efficient marketplace. With the deregulation of the energy marketplace, you now have the opportunity to choose who supplies your energy. Your traditional utility will continue to maintain and operate the Distribution System (pipes, wires, and meters), while competitive Supply System functions such as generation and supply sales will be open to competition. The increased competition motivates the competitive suppliers to improve customer service, expand product offerings, and improve cost effectiveness in the energy supply industry.

What are ESCOs/Energy Suppliers?

Energy Suppliers, or ESCOs, sell electricity and/or natural gas to retail customers. These suppliers may be small companies or large corporations, but they must be diligently approved by the Public Service Commission to be eligible sellers before they may make sales.

Why should I use Sutton Energy Group?

Sutton Energy Group will analyze your bill and handle the process to get you the most competitive Energy Supply rates in New York. We use the best ESCOs that have been supplying commercial and residential New Yorkers energy since Deregulation was started. We make the transition seamless, and you don’t have to do anything except agree to switch. Your utility company recognizes our ESCOs as authorized suppliers. When your enrollment is approved, we notify your utility company of the change. Finally, we stay on top of the rates to make sure you continue to save costs.

How is using Sutton Energy Group’s supplier different from my utility company?

The utility is more expensive. The utility charges more taxes and surcharges. The utility does not have the ability to offer you different rate plans. You will find the utility typically does not give service that is quite as personable. We actually frequent the establishments we serve. But the main reason people switch: to save money.

How do I know I am really getting the best rates?

For rate comparison, we encourage you to shop around, and you will see our rates are hard to beat. You must compare apples to apples; be careful of “teaser rates” offered by some newer companies. We are in the business of customer retention, not just customer acquistion. Look at the rates over the long term. Our energy prices are not only consistently lower then the Utility, they are also lower than other ESCOs.

Is the quality of energy, reliability, maintenance, and prioritization from the utility all exactly the same?

Yes, absolutely.

Is Con Edison OK with me buying electricity and gas from other energy suppliers?

Yes, they actually encourage it. Con Edison’s primary business role is energy delivery, and ESCOs are in the business of energy supply. Of course, even after you choose an energy supply company, Con Edison will still be there to read your meter, handle service calls, and provide emergency assistance. And you will still receive the same safe and reliable service you have come to expect. The utility, the ESCO, and the consumer are all doing their part to keep deregulation working.

Where can I learn more about Energy Competition?

The Public Service Commission has created a guide called “Use your Power to Choose?”. For your convenience, we have put it here.

Are there any fees?

Absolutely not. No switching fees, no maintenance fees, no cancellation fees on the month to month plan, no monthly fees, no line charges, and no hidden fees.

How am I billed?

Your utility company will continue to bill you as they always have. Your gas and/or electricity supply charges will appear along with your utility service and delivery charges. You still make only one payment to your utility company, with the same billing cycle.

If I switch, can I decide to return to my utility later?

Yes. If for any reason you decide that you prefer having your energy supplied by the utility, you can switch back. If you choose the variable rate plan there is no cost to switch back. If you choose a fixed rate, where we buy your energy a year in advance, then there are cancellation fees.

How much will I actually save?

In general you will see 7-10% annual savings off the Total Gas Supply Bill, and typically 5% -10% off the Total Electric Supply Bill.

Is it true that I will save on sales tax if I switch?

Yes. There is reduced sales tax on the electricity delivery charges and on the the natural gas delivery charges. In addition, certain supply surcharges are also removed.

Who are your Customers?

Our customers are small and large New York business owners, landlords, property managers, residences, institutions, and basically anyone that uses Natural Gas and/or Electric that has decision making power.
